Pete Cannon Meets Ghost Writerz

Biography

Pete Cannon has been making beats for most of his life, and has produced for the likes of Action Bronson, Guilty Simpson, Maffew Ragazino and Punchline (EMC) as well as having his music played on none other than DJ Premier’s radio show. His wide ranging talent has seen him working extensively with the UK’s biggest hip hop label, High Focus, producing a Top 10 chart hit for pop sensations Rizzle Kicks (“Lost  Generation”) and also releasing more electronic music under the pseudonym Opal Block on the esteemed Astral Black label.

Pioneers of the UK’s very own Sound System Music and a bedrock of the Sharp And Ready crew, the Ghost Writerz fuse reggae, hip hop and jungle with conscious lyricism, melodic hooks and virtuoso players of instruments to create supernatural, soaring bass music. The act is formed around producer Sleepy Time Ghost and vocalist/producer Jimmy Screech, whose credentials as a solo artist include two major international tours with Roots Manuva.

The duo’s early supporters include Toddla T, MistaJam, Goldierocks, Charlie Sloth, B Traits, Monki, Ras Kwame and more. Ghost Writerz also comprises Jimmy’s right hand man, G.O.L.D, the big bad Serocee (Toddla T, Jus Now), the incredible young talent of RTKal, and the sure hand of Hylu in the mix, and other featured artists include Shiffa Dan, Jago, Rodney P and Ty, to add to producer credits from Deadbelly, Aries, Curtis Lynch… the list goes on.

Cannon’s hook-up with Ghost Writerz came after an introduction to Sharp And Ready mastermind JC Lionbeat, from mutual friend and astounding MC, Dabbla. They got to chatting about how he had been making Jungle for years but hadn’t really let anyone hear it before. He may be primarily known for making hip hop, but Cannon was hugely influenced by the whole Jungle scene in the UK while growing up. He linked JC a few beats and it took off from there.

“I used to love getting all the old AWOL and roast tapes as a kid – it was always about the Dr S Gachet sets for me!” enthuses Cannon. “I just feel the whole production aesthetic for Jungle is a nice switch up in this day and age for what can be a sometimes oversaturated electronic music scene. It’s time to get back to having fun and repping the MCs. The music I’ve produced with Ghost Writerz came from this.”

The combination of Pete Cannon and Ghost Writerz is truly a formidable force to be reckoned with. Look out for the first release in early 2015.
