The biggest and nicest venue in our hometown. So this is pretty special. Ninja Tunes XX birthday also features Roots Manuva, Wrongtom, Andreya Triana and an after party at the Concorde with Coldcut et al. This is unmissable for Brighton music fans.

  • New signing: Zed Bias!

    11 Nov

As officially announced on Benji B’s Radio 1 show last night, we’re proud to say that we have signed Dave ‘Maddslinky’ Jones’ club smashing alias Zed Bias.

All we can say right now is that the new album will be released spring 2011 and will feature collaborations with Warp Records’ Mark Pritchard, aka Harmonic 313, aka one half of Africa Hi-Tek and Skream.

Head here for a bit more info on Zed Bias.

    07 May

From the soulful powerhouse vocals of the UK’s very own Alice Russell and US legend Spanky Wilson to Kylie Auldist and the horn-led, straight down the line dancefloor punch of The Bamboos, through Saravah Soul channelling ’60s Brazil via Noughties East London; the wry, jaunty, almost indie-pop shuffle of The Limp Twins; fast-rising Brighton producer Lack of Afro’s boisterous wah wah treatment of New Orleans’ Hot 8 Brass Band, and of course, Quantic’s trailblazing fusion of funk and soul with Colombian and Caribbean rhythms – you’ll find all this and more nestling happily under ‘funk’ in the Tru Thoughts lexicon.

  • Beta Hector single OUT NOW

    25 Apr

It’s been on the Etch Shop for the last week, but you can now buy the new Beta Hector 7” from any good record store (for those of you in the US you’ll have to wait until May 4th).

Beta Hector is the solo project of Simon Hill, founding member of adored British funk band, Baby Charles, who have attracted acclaim from the likes of Pitchfork, MOJO Magazine, Craig Charles (BBC 6Music), Gilles Peterson (BBC Radio 1), DJ Format and Andy Smith, to name a few.

These two tracks see Hill hooking up once again with his Baby Charles partner in crime, Dionne Charles, an enthralling and powerful frontwoman; having been compared to Sharon Jones of The Dap Kings, Dionne is known for her unique and boisterous vocals that smoothly ride over a funky, hard hitting drum groove.

  • AFRICA OYÉ 2010

    21 Apr

Our friends at Africa Oye have yet again laid on another amazing line up of African music, and all for free.

    Line up and information below.
    www.africaoye.com

    SATURDAY 19TH JUNE

    Boukman Eksperyans – Haiti
Les Espoirs De Coronthie – Guinea Conakry
The Gangbe Brass Band – Benin
    Ti Coca – Haiti
    Victor Deme – Burkina Faso

    SUNDAY 20 JUNE

    Andrew Tosh – Jamaica
    Carlou D – Senegal
    Les Freress Guisse – Senegal
    Michael Rose – Jamaica
    The Rasites – UK
    To’Mezclao – Cuba

Africa Oyé is the UK’s largest free celebration of African music and culture and takes place annually in Liverpool. Beginning in 1992 as a series of small gigs in the city centre, the event has gone from strength-to-strength, moving to its present Sefton Park home in 2002 to cope with demand. Now in its nineteenth year, Africa Oyé continues to grow. In 2009 the event attracted an audience of over 20,000 people and even more are expected to attend Oyé 2010.

With too many negative representations of Africa entrenched in images of war, disease, poverty and famine, Oyé seeks to redress the balance and highlight the fantastic range of cultures, foods, music and artists that make this great continent one of the most vibrant and inspiring in the world. The festival is also a truly international event that harnesses the spirit of multiculturalism and tolerance. It has played host to artists from nations right across Africa and also programmes music from South America and The Caribbean with Salsa, Soca and Reggae always a popular addition to the festivities.

But Africa Oyé is about more than music. Over 40 stalls selling the best food, drink, arts and crafts and fashion from Africa and beyond will again be present at the Oyé village along with long time supporter ‘News From Nowhere’, one of the UK’s premier stockists of African music, with all the performing artists and much more on sale, it’s a great opportunity to not only take in some of the best roots music around, but take some home with you too.

  • Over 1 Million Spotify plays

    25 Mar

It may be a divider of music industry opinion, but no-one can deny that Spotify has rapidly gained momentum and revolutionised the thorny business of legally enjoying music online – and we can now report that we have notched up more than 1,250,000 streams of Tru Thoughts tracks on the service in a matter of months.

Our own revolutionary idea is if you have streamed any Tru Thoughts album 4 or 5 times then we guess you probably like the album, and ask if you’d now consider buying it. While the exposure for the music is great, the money we get from Spotify is a drop in the ocean (0.001p a play!) so if you like the music, then why not take the next step and ensure that the musicians get paid for their work. Head to www.EtchShop.co.uk to buy direct from us and get the best price around on all Tru Thoughts music.
