Bonobo’s debut single on Tru Thoughts.

At the time of it’s release, few could have predicted just how successful Simon Green would go on to be. His first album for Tru Thoughts, ‘Animal Magic’, made him the unwilling figurehead of the so-called ‘chill out’ scene – a mantle which he subsequently shook off thanks to a string of successful releases on Tru Thoughts and Ninja Tune.

This was how we first introduced the world to a man called Bonobo, all those years ago:

Bonobos are a group of apes. In Will Self’s novel, “The Great Apes”, Bonobos are the ones who sit round the back of the bike shed smoking spliffs and listening to dub. This particular Bonobo, however, is one Simon Green, a multi-talented musician who not only writes and produces all his music single-handedly, but also plays all the tracks’ various instruments himself. ‘Terrapin’ is a gorgeous piece of music, fluttering gently around live sitar by Simon and a recently unearthed vocal sample of a classmate, recorded when they were twelve years old. Mr Scruff’s mix is radical and inventive, transforming the track into an insistently funky uptempo dancefloor tune, beefing up the bass and adding skittering drums whilst retainging the naive melody which lies at the heart of the original. ‘Dismantling Frank’ is a lush laid-back groove, in 6/8 time, featuring a raw and funky bassline and a nagging live organ hook.

Please note: This 12” has now been deleted. However, all the tracks are still available on separate Tru Thoughts releases.
‘Terrapin’ can be found on ‘Animal Magic’ [TRUCD/LP007] & ‘When Shapes Join Together 1’ [TRUCD/LP002].
The Mr Scruff remix resurfaced on ‘When Shapes Join Together 2’ [TRUCD/LP026]
‘Dismantling Frank’ made it onto Bonobo’s ‘One Offs… Remixes and B-Sides’ [TRUCD/LP031] collection.
