Shake Down 7"
Early 7” single of raw, drum-based funk from Nathaniel Pearn; aka Natural Self, Keno 1 and one half of The Broken Keys.
‘Shake Down’ is a percussive beat-fest that worked wonders on the dancefloor at the time of release. After we saw the reaction to it’s first ever drop it was clear that Tru Thoughts had to give it a full commercial release.
Pearn uses a minimal arrangement to great effect. The tough rhythms and sparing use of horns create an almost live sound, freed from the constraints of the sampler and the studio.
‘Shake Down’ also appears on the Tru Thoughts compilation, ‘When Shapes Join Together 2’.
AA-side, ‘The Soul Step’, has a heavy Batucada influence that builds and builds with each blow of the whistle and every scream of the horns. The elasticity of its rhythm add warmth and charm to another triumphant Natural Self production.
DJ Magazine “A funk gem that continues Tru Thoughts’ heritage of dancefloor beats”
The P Brothers “To make something like this is a stroke of genius. It’s really different and the way it’s recorded just sounds so right”
IDJ “Brilliant stuff – this absolutely rocks!”
Big Daddy “Brilliant as usual”
Martin Morales, Ocho Recordings “Massive track. A great mix of Latin, Batucada funk”
