On their first 12” single, The Broken Keys successfully resist easy categorisation – delivering more of the genre-defying solid beats and accomplished musicianship that made ‘Gravity’ such a stunning debut.

On an album bursting with standout tracks, ‘The Witch’ quickly became an instant hit with DJs and listeners alike.

Its arresting fusion of fuzz-box blues and ragged b-boy rhythms made it a firm favourite on the club circuit – prompting this 12” vinyl release by Tru Thoughts.

The track appears here in both vocal and instrumental form, backed by two previously unreleased cuts as well as an exclusive cover version by label-mates The Bamboos.

‘Flow’ (Part 1 & 2) captures everything we know and love about the classic funk, soul, rock and hip hop records of the past four decades. Its heavy beats, rhythmic handclaps and distorted sax betray a fondness for the production values of The Bomb Squad or James Brown era funk, without compromising the freshness and immediacy of The Broken Keys’ sound.

The Bamboos version of ‘The Witch’ was first performed live during their UK summer tour, prompting a deluge of letters and emails from people desperate to get their hands on a copy.
The Australian six-piece raise the tempo of the original; whipping up a maelstrom of raw breaks and tight grooves – transforming ‘The Witch’ into a high-octane instrumental deep funk workout, worthy of any club sound-system.
