“Butterflies” is the fourth single to be lifted from Anchorsong’s acclaimed ‘Ceremonial’ album, which came out at the beginning of the year, winning over tastemakers including BBC 6Music’s Lauren Laverne (who has repeatedly proclaimed it one of her top albums of 2016), Tom Ravenscroft and Steve Lamacq; and gaining ongoing support from long-time champion Huw Stephens (BBC R1).

Originally from Japan, but now based in London, on this record producer Masaaki Yoshida combines his unique gift for catchy melodic phrasing with idiosyncratic beats and vintage African influences. The melodic and rhythmic beauty of “Butterflies” is enhanced with delicate Celesta and acoustic guitar, making for a luminous track that evokes images of butterflies at sunset. One of many attention-grabbing cuts on the album, “Butterflies” shows a softer side to Anchorsong’s style; early support for this uplifting piece, long before it was highlighted as a single, includes tastemaker LA station KCRW’s Song of the Day, and daytime airplay from Lauren Laverne.
