Minor Swing / Eastern City Lights
Released: 7th Oct, 2013
Label: Tru Thoughts
“Minor Swing”/“Eastern City Lights”, out 7th October, is the new single by Belleruche, bringing a taste of the eclectic delights to be discovered on their ‘Best Of’ album, which follows on 28th October on Tru Thoughts.
On the eve of this milestone release, Belleruche have announced that they are saying farewell, or at least, “see you in a bit”; the close-knit London trio have decided to pursue individual creative and personal avenues after eight hardworking, exhilarating and globetrotting years of Belleruche.
Over 2 CDs, Belleruche’s ‘Best Of’ will bring together 28 tracks, carefully selected from their four acclaimed albums and their cache of remixes and B-sides; and a beautiful booklet featuring exclusive content from the band members including track-by-track comments and reminiscences, and a collection of their personal photographs snapped at tours, sessions and downtime across the life of the band.
The “Minor Swing”/”Eastern City Lights” single spotlights the early music of Belleruche alongside the latest track they have written together as a band. As a standout cut on their 2007 debut album, the party rocking, dusty turntable soul anthem “Minor Swing” became a huge hit with leftfield tastemakers, crowds and record buyers alike, with a fresh sound that predated and predicted the electro-swing fever. Written six years later, in a Bulgarian hotel room overlooking a ring-road, in a pensive moment on one of their many international live tours, “Eastern City Lights” (which gains its first full release here) has become a favourite among the band themselves, embodying where their music is currently at, and takes the closing spot on the impending ‘Best Of’.
These two tracks give a snapshot of the diversity and evolution within the always distinctive Belleruche sound, which is brought into sharp focus on the full ‘Best Of’ release. From the early likes of “Minor Swing” through the laid back hip hop jazz of “Northern Girls” (which has had over 1 million YouTube hits); to distorted bluesy guitar pop outings like BBC 6Muisic Rebel Playlist winner “Fuzz Face”, and the latter day forays into delicate and dark, intricately crafted electronica on their most recent LP ‘Rollerchain’; the twin constants of Belleruche’s music have always been are irresistibly catchy melodies and genuine raw soul.
Their three core elements of siren-like vocals (care of Kathrin deBoer), innovative guitar (Ricky Fabulous) and hip hop turntablism (DJ Modest) led Belleruche to coin their own genre of Turntable Soul Music; but a constant spirit of experimentation means each record and each live show has held new surprises in store. Recent years have found the band playing with myriad new bits of kit, including Ableton Live; while multi-talented front-woman deBoer has taken up bass guitar duties, as well an array of vocal loopers and delay pedals.
Defined by a down-to-earth DIY ethos and a real affinity with their fans all over the World, Belleruche have always had a boundless enthusiasm for hopping on a train (their preferred transport, for reasons including: the environment, the views and a good old-fashioned sense of adventure), and playing their music to as many people as possible. In addition to headlining major tours in the UK, Mainland Europe, USA, Australia, Russia and beyond, their diverse festival bookings include SXSW, Glastonbury, Secret Garden Party and Montreux Jazz Festival.
When they first started out, having discovered their odd musical chemistry over a cup of tea and a jam session, Belleruche grafted and improvised, lovingly producing three 7”s which attracted the attention of Tru Thoughts. Their debut album, ‘Turntable Soul Music’ pipped the likes of Bonobo and Quantic to become the fastest selling LP in the label’s history, and their unique, genre-blending sound has gone on to gain heavy tastemaker support across the board, from Steve Lamacq to Gilles Peterson (BBC 6Music), Mixmag to The Times.
Look out for live ‘Best Of’ launch parties in London, Brighton, and more cities to be announced; expect a celebratory set packed with heavy hitting singles, crowd-pleasers and personal picks, and special guests galore.
