Get Started Remix EP
Mark de Clive-Lowe (MdCL)
Released: 29th Oct, 2012
Label: Tru Thoughts
“Get Started Remix EP” is out on October 29th/30th on Tru Thoughts, highlighting the second single from Mark de Clive-Lowe’s noted ‘Renegades’ album. With worldwide acclaim and support over the last year from Gilles Peterson (BBC 6Music) and Jason Bentley (KCRW) to name a few, MdCL’s electro-jazz influenced album is given a fresh spin with this EP featuring original cuts and a handful of eclectic remixes.
The lead track is standout album cut “Get Started” feat. Omar & Prince-alumnae Sheila E. With a relentlessly driving drum track, “Get Started” is a futuristic soul classic with a UK dancefloor twist. The track features a cast of musicians whom MdCL credits as his dream band – the signature smooth vocals of label mate Omar (MBE), the Queen of percussion Sheila E, Pino Palladino on bass, Lil John Roberts on drums, and Omar Philips on additional percussion. The polyrhythmic textures blend perfectly with Mark’s pristine production of sparkling synths overlaid with spacey FX.
The EP takes a melancholic turn with notable favorite, “Hooligan” featuring nia andrews (who also collaborates with Janelle Monae/Common). nia’s haunting vocals and twisted story weave expressively between Mark’s bouncing bass lines, minor chord changes, and floating flute melodies courtesy of Finn Peters. Tru Thoughts label mate, and leading light of UK jazz, Nostalgia 77 embraces the vibe with a remix treatment that includes an eerie Theremin and head nodding drums, accenting the emotive song with heavy reverbs and delays.
Amsterdam based producer and DJ Full Crate (22 Tracks) brings a fresh, energetic remix to “Get Started” with a screwed down vocal sample, hand claps, booming bass tones and a series rhythm that hits deep. Legend and pioneer A-Sides takes a different approach to the track with a straight up drum ‘n’ bass remix – here, Omar’s vocals sit atop fast break beats for the first time, which will definitely please drum ‘n’ bass aficionados. The EP concludes with a smoother, nu jazz style groove with D-Felics reworking “Everything” feat. Ova Soul.
Japanese-New Zealander Mark de Clive-Lowe is a complex producer, keyboardist, composer and DJ. He embraced the piano at age four; soon becoming an accomplished Jazz musician. Before moving to Los Angeles, MdCL spent 10 years in London where he states he honed his producer skills whilst working alongside Bugz In The Attic and Jody Watley. Now residing in Los Angeles, MdCL continues to tour the World, where he “effortlessly spins samples, drum beats, piano and keys and a live band into a tight aural choreography” (LA Weekly); and his monthly residency, Church (LA/NYC) “has earned a reputation as one of the premiere jam nights in the city”, according to LA Times. Studio projects include the Rotterdam Jazz Orchestra Big Band Project; album production for Sy Smith and Sandra St Victor; and collaborating on Jody Watley’s new LP. He is also going back to his roots, playing jazz piano for the celebrated Dwight Trible (former singer with Pharoah Sanders).
