Your Love Weighs A Tonne
Released: 19th May, 2014
Label: Tru Thoughts
“Your Love Weighs A Tonne”, one of the standout slices of blues and folk infused jazzy beauty from Nostalgia 77’s February LP ‘A Journey Too Far’, gains a much deserved single release on 19th May, along with a killer remix by rising producer Ambassadeurs.
This second official single from the LP closely follows a full band Maida Vale session for Jamie Cullum on BBC Radio 2, and additional live appearances around the album’s release including Robert Elms (BBC London) and John Kennedy (XFM), to add to glowing reviews and further radio play including Lauren Laverne (BBC 6Music), Huey Morgan (BBC 6Music/R2), and many more worldwide. The new songs have also been brought to glorious life in gigs including a sold-out three night residency at London’s Vortex and high billing at Tru Thoughts’ 15th Birthday bash at Koko, with more live dates currently booking.
Showcasing developments in both sonics and songwriting from Benedic Lamdin - the producer, composer, guitarist and all-round musical maverick behind the Nostalgia 77 guise - the new material is filled with refreshing blues, folk and psychedelic influences and blends a poetic, highly visual lyricism with his much lauded skills and instincts as a composer. A further development of his creative partnership with German singer Josa Peit, who joined the band as lead vocalist for the last Nostalgia 77 LP (2011’s ‘The Sleepwalking Society’), has also upped the ante.
“Your Love Weighs A Tonne” brings the perfect combination of a warm, vintage sound with a freshness of melody and arrangement, all tied together by the effortless grace of Josa Peit’s vocals. Reflecting the emotional see-saw of a troubled relationship, the strident horn hook and loping, bluesy jazz lament of the main chorus and verse are suddenly lifted up on the breeze of a lightly skipping, folky break before stealing back in, in a hypnotically shifting pattern.
A deep, sub-bass-heavy remix comes from Ambassadeurs, the young Brighton based producer demonstrating the prodigious skills that have brought him to the attention of i-D, Resident Advisor, Clash, XLR8R, Mixmag, Gilles Peterson, and many more, and gained hundreds of thousands of YouTube hits. Adhering to the song structure while playfully transforming it, this re-rub finds murky bass interweaving with dreamlike interludes, shuddering synths and downright extravagant toms for a drop of retro-futurist, late night dancefloor drama.
Testament to his unique musical talents, Nostalgia 77 main man Benedic Lamdin is hugely in demand as a producer and engineer, with work for a diverse array of artists as well as his own studio albums and esoteric side-projects (the most recent of which, Nostalgia 77 and the Monster, led to heavy BBC 6Music play and a live session for Cerys Matthews). 2013 saw him lending his production touch to Valerie June, Teotima, Lizbet Sempa, Jason Yarde, Gail Brand, Robert Stillman and Brass Mask in addition to a range of work with Jamie Cullum, a relationship that has evolved from the latter’s longtime admiration and support for Nostalgia 77 on his radio show. Having produced two tracks on 'Momentum' (Island), Cullum’s crossover LP featuring Roots Manuva, he has also recently recorded a complete album with the star, set for release this year.
